Stage 1 · Lesson 1 of 7
Love and fear, usually together
When a parent says "you will become a doctor" or "computer science is not a real degree", it usually sounds like control. Underneath, it is very often fear wearing the clothes of certainty. They are afraid you will struggle, be poor, be judged, or end up somewhere they cannot help you.
Love and fear sit together: the more they care, the louder the fear can get. This does not make every demand right, and it does not mean you must obey. It means the real conversation is often about their fear, not about the degree. If you only argue about the subject, you miss the part they care about most.
Common traphearing only control and replying to that, which turns a worried parent into an opponent.
