Handling rejection and setbacks

Stage 4 · Lesson 6 of 7

Getting used to no on purpose

Internship and job rejections

Jia Jiang, an entrepreneur, spent 100 days deliberately asking strangers for things he expected to be refused, and found that rejection hurt less with practice and that people said yes more often than he expected. You do not need to do anything dramatic.

Set a target number of applications or outreach messages per week and count the noes as progress, since each one means you tried. Some job seekers aim for a set number of rejections a month rather than a set number of offers, because rejections are under your control and offers are not.

Common trapavoiding asking at all to avoid the pain, which guarantees the outcome you fear.
