Stage 2 · Lesson 3 of 7
Starting a conversation
Most people are waiting for someone else to start. You can be that person with very simple lines: a comment about the shared situation ("Did you understand the last part of the lecture?"), a small question ("Which hostel are you in?"), or a compliment on something they did ("Your presentation was clear").
Then ask one follow-up question and listen to the answer. You do not need to be funny or confident; being interested is enough. Remember names and use them next time.
If you speak in a second language, short, friendly questions work well and people are usually patient.
Common trapwaiting for a perfect opening line. There is none, and simple works best.
