Building your support system

Stage 2 · Lesson 7 of 7

Ways that work if you are quiet or shy

Making friends at university, hostel or a new city

You do not need to be outgoing to make good friends. Quiet people often do best one to one or in small groups, around a shared activity: a study pair, a project team, a sports game, a volunteer task, a gaming group. Activities give you something to talk about and room for silence.

Prepare a few questions in advance, and allow yourself to leave events early once you have had one real conversation. Online first can help too: talking in a course forum or Discord before meeting in person. Being a good listener is a strength people value.

Common trapcomparing yourself with the loudest person in the room and deciding you are bad at friendship.
