Stage 4 · Lesson 6 of 6
Keeping in touch with mentors
Most mentor relationships fade because the learner disappears after the first call. Keep them alive lightly: send a thank-you within a day, an update when you act on their advice, and a short note every few months about your progress or something they might find interesting.
Congratulate them on their news. When you ask again, it then feels natural rather than transactional. Over the years, some of these people become your referees, collaborators or friends.
Common traponly contacting mentors when you need something, such as a referral the night before a deadline. They notice, and it is harder to help someone they have not heard from in a year.
