Stage 4 · Lesson 1 of 6
What a mentor is, and is not
A mentor is someone with more experience who gives you perspective, advice and sometimes introductions. They are not a parent, a therapist, a job agency or a guaranteed referral. Good mentoring is usually light: an occasional conversation, a review of a plan, an honest answer to a question you could not ask anyone else.
Mentors are often older professionals, but a senior student two years ahead can be a great mentor too, because they remember exactly what your stage feels like.
Common traplooking for one perfect mentor who will guide your whole career. Few people have the time for that, and asking for it can push them away.
