Stage 7 · Lesson 7 of 7
Coercion, abuse and getting help
If disagreement turns into control through violence, threats, confinement, taking your documents, forcing a marriage, or threats to harm you or themselves, it is no longer a family negotiation. Many countries treat forced marriage and domestic violence as crimes, and there are organisations that help quietly and confidentially.
Put safety first: tell a trusted adult outside the home, keep copies of your ID and important documents somewhere safe, and contact a helpline. Find A Helpline lists free confidential services by country; in Pakistan, Rozan offers counselling; in India, Tele-MANAS on 14416 offers mental health support.
If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. See /roadmaps/mental-health/ for more support.
