Stage 7 · Lesson 2 of 7
Money and independence
Much of what families control comes through money: fees, pocket money, housing, a phone. Financial independence, even partial, gives you room to choose. Start small: tutoring, freelancing, a part-time or remote job, paid internships, scholarships.
Learn to budget, save a small emergency fund, and track what you earn. When you can pay for your own course or rent, conversations change, because the risk falls more on you. Independence does not mean refusing family support or stopping contributions to home. Many people send money home for years while choosing their own work.
Common trapcutting off family money before you can support yourself, and then being forced back on worse terms.
